Parliamentary elections are normally held every five years, and 2024 will be the first election for the brand new seat of Penrith and Solway.

Elections to the unitary councils are held every four years, with the next due in 2027.

Elections to the councils are held every four years, with 46 councillors elected across 46 wards in Cumberland Council and 65 councillors across 33 wards in Westmorland and Furness Council.13 of the Cumberland wards are wholly or partly in the Penrith and Solway constituency, and 4 of the Westmorland and Furness wards.

Council by-elections to fill casual vacancies arising from resignations, disqualification or the death of a Councillor are held as and when necessary.
